“Snatch and grab” harvest

Lincolnshire farmer James Lunn said two days of rain have caused a “snatch and grab” harvest.

He is confident second wheats yielded 10t/ha, with first wheats doing slightly better. Specific weight and quality is good but yields are more varied in the first wheats, even within the same field.

He said main variety Consort was not of very good quality, but there was plenty of straw and was easy to thrash. Einstein possibly yielded better than other varieties, but he said he was disappointed it lodged due to very weak straw.

He said harvest had to be a lot better than last year, with less red grain and more pleasing results. But he said the quality will soon be affected if there is much more rain, and one field of Consort has already gone down.
