Spring barley better than last year
Yorkshire farmer Derek Lamplough said harvest has come to a standstill due to heavy showers and thunderstorms in Scarborough. He said some of the wheat has just ripened and will take a few days to dry out after this rain.
Half of Claire has been cut with yields over 10t/ha, which is above the five year average and a lot better than last year, he said. Quality is fine, but he expects the remaining wheat to deteriorate if rain continues.
Moisture levels are around 17 – 18%, he noted.
Cocktail spring barley quality yields are 0.6t/ha above last year at 6.9t/ha and nitrogen levels are suitable for malting, he said. Bushel weights are pretty good, and moisture remains around 17%.
