Spring barley looks good

Doug Fowlie from Peterhead in Scotland is waiting for the rest of his spring barley to ripen. The 40ha he has cut so far yielded well and he hopes the quality is good enough for malting.

Some neighbours have started cutting wheat, and he expects to start cutting his own fields this weekend (Sept 3/ 4).

His biggest problem this harvest has been the price of fuel making drying costs too expensive. With crops coming in at 20% moisture, he said costs are high.

He said progress has not been good due to rain this week, but expects to be able to get through now the weather forecast has improved.
