Staffs farmer pleased with wheat

John Wilcox is pleased with harvest at Batch Acre Hall near Stratford in Staffordshire, having thought the crop had suffered from the drought in early June.

Nijinsky, Robigus and second wheat Einstein yielded 7.5 – 10t/ha, with an average of 8.75t/ha. Bushel weights were pleasing at 76kg/hl, although he said one 20ha field let him down. He does not know why.

Most of the crop came in at 13% so he was pleased no drying costs were needed, except for 150 tonnes of early crop which was sold on a ÂŁ70/t contract and had to be dried to 15%.

Yields and quality are slightly down on last year although Mr Wilcox said the crop has been much easier to combine this year.

  • Crop/Variety: Nijinsky, Robigus and Einstein winter wheat

  • Area: 240ha

  • Yield: 7.5 – 10t/ha, av 8.75t/ha
