Successful wheat between the showers – harvest update
He‘s finished three quarters of the 400ha (1,000 acre) wheat crop with success.
Yields were above 10 t/ha (4.05 t/acre) and the wheat managed to hold on to the hagberg levels despite the rain.
He‘s very happy with the varieties he used: Malacca, Claire, Solstice; saying “they did exceedingly well”.
Mr Carter took the decision to harvest at every possible opportunity to get the crop into the shed.
“We‘ve taken some chances. We just decided to harvest whenever we can.”
However Mr Carter had severe problems with his oilseed rape this year, as much of it had to be re-drilled. His spring oilseed rape is now yielding better than the winter rape did.
“Perhaps we should have pulled it all out and re-drilled it all with spring rape,” he added.
