Wheat harvest begins

He has just finished combining the spring barley and is going to make a start on his wheat this afternoon (Sept 3).

The 100ha (250 acre) spring barley crop consisted of Optic and Cocktail, yielding on average 6.8 t/ha (2.75 t/acre).

He was pleased with both varieties as they had low nitrogen and screenings but is worried he might get some premium taken away because of germination.

By the end of the barley harvest moisture levels dropped to 16%.

“It dropped so quickly,” he said.

Mr Fuller-Shapcott is not very confident about his wheat prospects though.

“The colour of the crop isn‘t very healthy, but at least its all standing.”
