Wilts grower finishes barley and osr

James Dean from Church Farms in Wiltshire finished 160ha of winter barley and 120ha of oilseed rape with mixed results.

Maris Otter winter barley met malting standards with nitrogen levels of 1.6%, and yielded 5t/ha.

Pearl results were 1.75% nitrogen at a yield of 7.75t/ha. The nitrogen levels were higher last year, but the yields were similar.

“It is all dry so looks alright at the moment,” said Mr Dean.

“The malting barley has done well, but we had poor feed barley.” Pict winter barley yielded around 7.5t/ha, however it suffered from mosaic virus, he confirmed.

One hundred and twenty hectares of oilseed rape had also “done well”. Caracus yielded 3.9t/ha and Canberra yielded 3.96t/ha.
