Finished at Freemans Farm

Chris Vowles finished combining last week at Freemans Farm, Barrow Gurney, Bristol, and is reasonably pleased with this year’s harvest.

“It was all done in two weeks and we’ve seen some good crops,” he said.

The 21ha of Propino and Quench spring barley yielded between 5.7t and 6.2t/ha. Although yields were not record breaking, the straw and bushel weight was very good, with quality much better than last year.

The 11ha of spring wheat was less pleasing, at only 4.9t/ha. “It was a dwarf variety and quite cheap to grow, but we’re certainly not overwhelmed with the performance.”

Moisture was good all-round, with nothing having to be put through a drier, said Mr Vowles.

“We were busy baling until a breakdown on the baler brought us to a halt last night (2 September). It’ll be nice to have a rest though.”
