Hundreds of pigs die in farm fire

Hundreds of pigs died after a major fire broke out on a Suffolk farm.

Up to 500 pigs are believed to have perished after the fire broke out at Barley Brigg Farm, Stradbroke, on Sunday (21 July).

The incident involved two buildings on fire. The first was 10m x 50m in size and housed pigs while a second building of a similar size containing about 400t of straw.

Although many pigs died, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said it managed to assist the farmer in removing other pigs from the building and fighting the fire.

Barley Brigg is a commercial pig production site operated by Rattlerow Farms.

One appliance from Stradbroke, one from Eye and one from Harleston in Norfolk were initially mobilised to the incident.

A further four appliances and water carriers were requested.

This saw two appliances attend the incident from Diss in Norfolk, as well as a pump from Framlingham and a water carrier from Newmarket.

A water carrier from Leiston and a command unit and support pump from Woodbridge were also mobilised.
