Become a Pulse Pioneer in new farming-led research project

Provided by

LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is the leading organisation delivering and promoting more sustainable, regenerative farming. Working with farmers, the food industry, scientists, environmentalists, teachers, young people and consumers, we are delivering productivity and prosperity among our farmers, enriching the environment and engaging young people and society with more sustainable farming and food production. LEAF promotes more regenerative farming through Integrated Farm Management (IFM). It is a whole farm business approach that uses the best of modern technology and traditional methods.

We are proud to be one of 17 partners involved in a new, four-year, industry-led research project – Nitrogen-efficient plants for Climate-Smart arable cropping systems (NCS) which delves deeper into the potential of pulses and legumes to address the current climate crisis.

The ground-breaking project has two aims; the first to support farmers in reducing agricultural emissions by increasing pulse cropping in arable rotations and the second; to substitute 50% of imported soya meal used in feed, with more climate-friendly home-grown pulses and legumes.

What will the project involve?

  • 200 UK farmers will be given direct support to establish their business’ carbon baseline, using the Farm Carbon Toolkit
  • GHG emissions will be tracked throughout the project which will form a fundamental part of the dataset
  • The leading innovators amongst them will be paid to work with scientists to co-design crop and feeding trials to carry out on their farms. These ‘Pulse Pioneers’ will explore ways and means for soils to thrive, crop yields to build and livestock productivity to flourish, through better use and marketing of home-grown pulses and legumes

How to be part of this exciting journey

If you are passionate about pulses and legumes, you can register to be part of the PulsePep farmer-led community. The platform is free for all to join and offers farmers the opportunity of support to carbon-baseline their farm and achieve the best from pulse crops.

Otherwise, head to the NCS project webpage to find out more about what the project has to offer and the partners involved!
