Sustainability – it’s just the way we do things

For Dunbia, and its parent company Dawn Meats, sustainability isn’t the latest buzz word, it’s just the way they’ve always done things.

The company was the first European beef and lamb processor to set Science-Based Targets and measure its progress on externally verified sustainability goals, committing to a 30% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030, and a 28% reduction in Scope 3 emissions intensity from a 2016 base year.

During 2020 Scope 3 on farm emissions across the group reduced by 189,000 tons CO2 equivalent.

The company have since reassessed their targets and recently announced they have updated their operational (Scope 1 and 2) target to reduce emissions by 59% by 2030, which is consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C, the highest level of ambition.

Sustainability remains at the heart of the business and having a philosophy of continuous improvement drives the focus on reducing waste streams and increasing efficiencies, whilst doing the right thing by their staff, suppliers and customers.

Sarah Haire, Group Head of Agriculture strongly believes she can use her role as a way to inspire and ensure there is a bright future for the livestock industry.

Tackling the issues in this space requires a joined-up approach across the whole supply chain, from the farmer to the end consumer, and it’s not just about making headlines, it’s about delivering real change.

There is no quick fix, it is about working together which is one of the reasons Dunbia became a key partner to the Farmers Weekly Transition project – helping to secure a sustainable future for UK farm businesses and British agriculture.

In October, Dunbia launched Farm Green, a Sustainable Farming Programme that looks to inspire sustainable farming whilst equipping farmers with the tools they need to achieve this.

Working in collaboration with industry bodies, Young Farmers Clubs and Colleges, key information and resources will be shared through Dunbia’s social media pages and digital platforms, using the Farm Green logo and hashtag.

It will focus on simple things to help farmers understand their role, from data collection to understanding what a carbon footprint is and how to use key performance indicators (KPIs).

The first event took place on November 2nd and saw Breedr host a webinar on the importance of data collection on farm and is still available to watch via Dunbia’s YouTube channel here.
