Farmer Network launches new support for young farmers

Backed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Farming in Protected Landscapes Fund, the initiative aims to help 18-to-40-year-olds establish themselves in farming at a time of major uncertainty within the agricultural sector.
The programme offers 10 business support vouchers worth up to £500 each, providing one-to-one advice on farm diversification, business development and practical farming skills.

Participants will also receive mentoring from experienced advisors who can share their own farming experiences and insights.
Programme co-ordinator Carol Moffat said: “We are keen to work with the young farmers to understand their individual business needs and to support them throughout the programme.
“We will develop a network of young farmers wanting to progress a farming-related business and help them to communicate with each other.
“This will include signposting to opportunities for funding, training and equipment as required.”
Two on-farm events will also be held as part of the scheme.
The first is on 8 December at High Hall Farm, Croglin, Cumbria, where the Stobart family will showcase their farm diversifications and share the business ethos behind their operations.
The second event will be shaped by participants and may cover business planning, animal health, or updates on government agricultural policies and environmental schemes.

Time of change
Farmer Network managing director Adam Day emphasised the importance of backing young farmers during a time of change.
“There has never been a more important time to support the next generation of farmers,” he said.
“Their boundless enthusiasm and commitment to what currently feels like a fragile industry, must be rewarded.”
He added: “We must give our young people in farming confidence to stick in right now, in the hope and expectation that one day they will be recognised for their growing contribution to food production, landscapes, community and the rural economy.”
The Farmer Network is an independent, non-profit, farmer-led organisation supporting agricultural businesses across Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland.
