Dairy Crest recalls milk after contamination fears

Dairy Crest has recalled batches of British milk from two supermarkets over fears of contamination with cleaning fluids.

Two shoppers complained of a “chemical taste” when drinking whole milk bought from Morrisons and Budgens and the processor has issued a recall as a precaution.

Dairy Crest traced the contamination to a single, routine sample affected by an engineering glitch at its plant in Foston, Derbyshire.

It said the amount of tainted product would have been very small, as the fault lasted for less than 20 minutes.

In response, the company has recalled all six-pint bottles of whole milk bought at those stores with use-by dates of 5 and 7 November.

Consumers have been told not to drink the milk and to return it to the supermarket for a refund.

In a statement, Dairy Crest said it had reviewed all its production over the past 12 days and was confident that no other products for any other customers had been affected.

“Having identified the root cause of this issue, corrective actions have been put in place to prevent any future occurrence and additional sampling has been undertaken to ensure that all product manufactured is of the correct standard and specification,” the statement said. “We are continuing to monitor the situation closely.”
