Mid-month ‘frenzy’ at Beeston Castle

Demand for dairy stock was almost frenzied at the monthly fixture at Beeston Castle, Cheshire, where 101 milking heifers averaged £832 and 25 entries broke the £1000 barrier.

A slightly reduced entry – 109 head – served only to fire demand even more.

Quality was good throughout with the top call of £1180 coming for a much admired second-calver from Helen Gibbins who runs the Ivygrove Holstein herd at Whitchurch, Shropshire.

This young cow was part of the herd’s dispersal which will take place with regular consignments to this venue in the coming months.

Mrs Gibbins’ Romsey Mace 8th, by Whittail-Valley Zest, was giving 49kg on the day after a mid-February calving.

Buyer was K Titterton for his herd at Blythe Bridge, Staffs.

Lancs vendor Alan Outram earned £1120 for a calved heifer by Carol Prelude Mtoto giving 30kg.

She joins the herd of Shrewsbury milk producer Richard Holloway.

Mr Outram had a sizzling trade for his calved heifers.

Matching the £1120 sale was a heifer by Oliva Lausan Crew taken by Messrs Shutt & Mansell of Newport, Shropshire, who also gave another £1120 and £1100 for entries from this consignment.

In-calf cows reached £1040 for an entry from K J Morris, Redditch, and bought by Mr Titterton while a £970 call from Mr Holloway led the in-calf heifers.

His purchase was a Duncan Progress daughter from the Manorfield herd of David and Ann Calvert, Skipton, North Yorks.

Averages: 101 milking heifers 832, seven in-calf heifers 830.
