Numbers and prices up at Welshpool market

A larger entry of 4,181 prime hoggets averaged 205p/kg on Monday (5 March), 1p up on the week. Standard lambs averaged 206p/kg, with medium weights settling at 205p/kg, and selling to a peak to 259p/kg, while heavy types averaged 185p/kg. Almost 1,480 cull ewes went under the hammer, to average £64.27 a head and top at £146. Rams settled at £87.14 and peaked at £128.
A smaller entry of 178 store lambs pushed prices up by £10 a head, to average £68.78, with more Continental cross lambs on offer. Empty ewe lambs sold to £99, while Suffolk cross ewe lambs carrying singles reached £122.
In the cattle ring, over 30-month cows averaged 128p/kg, with bulls at 121p/kg and under 48-month steers 165p/kg.
