Plan sets out strategy for north-west dairy sector

A new strategy aims to boost dairy consumption and improve supply chain efficiency throughout the north-west dairy sector.

The northwest dairy group strategy and action plan is based on research carried out by Promar International with support from Reaseheath College in Cheshire and has three key objectives:

  1. To improve the environmental credentials of the dairy sector in the north west
  2. To strengthen the supply chain
  3. To improve education and boost consumption of dairy products

It also wants more effective interaction with other organisations in the north west and beyond, with emphasis on regional policy, inward investment and skills development.

Speaking at the launch of the plan, Dairy UK director general Jim Begg said the group was right to focus on measures to boost consumption and improve supply chain efficiency. “If it can sustain this positive and constructive approach, there is every chance it will achieve its aim,” he said.

He acknowledged the whole sector faced short-term challenges of price volatility, but said there were 10 key reasons to be more positive about the future (see panel).
