Positive attitude is rife among young farmers

Farming is on the way up and those coming into the industry face a bright future, so Young Farmers gathered in Blackpool were told last weekend.

“There is much less negativity among younger farmers,” Euryn Jones, agricultural policy director of Barclays Bank, told delegates at the National Federation of YFC’s convention forum.

“This is not down to the naivety of youth, this is down to an inherent ability to accept change, to see opportunities more clearly and to grasp them more readily.”

Denis Chamberlain, chairman of the government’s Fresh Start initiative, stressed the need to promote the positive aspects of careers in the land-based sector.

“We are in a period of change and there are some great opportunities.”

This upbeat mood was also evident among the young people at the convention due to leave agricultural colleges and universities this summer.
