Records tumbled at Monday’s (6 May) sale, with both calves and stores setting new market highs. Despite the bank holiday, 326 cattle and 1,311 sheep were on offer, with vendors being well rewarded. An 11-day-old British Blue bull calf set a new record of ÂŁ466, with other beef breeds averaging ÂŁ142 to ÂŁ207, and Holstein Friesians averaging ÂŁ45-97.

In the store section, a 25-month-old Limousin cross made a record ÂŁ1,590, with Blue heifers from the same producer reaching ÂŁ1,400. “In all, 39 of the 173 cattle on offer topped the ÂŁ1,000 mark,” said auctioneer Alastair Sneddon.

With only 66 new season lambs on offer, trade reached 285p/kg and averaged 269.44p/kg. Hoggs topped at 250p/kg and settled at 200.51p/kg.
