Last Friday’s (27 September) annual show and sale attracted more than 1,200 Rough Fell breeding ewes, selling to 44 different purchasers.

Judge Ben Williams picked a pen from NC and S Dodd, Flakebridge, as his champion lot, which went on to sell for the day’s top price of £140. Overall, breeding ewes averaged £67, with shearlings averaging £75 and gimmer lambs £56.

The annual prize show and sale of Swaledale breeding sheep saw pen of 15 ewes reach a top price of £150 a head, with trade slightly more cautious than last year.

Other hill-bred shearlings commanded generally competitive trade, with Herdwicks reaching £46 a head, Cheviots £92 and Scottish Black Faces £72 apiece.
