Ringside at Lockerbie Mart, Dumfries and Galloway. Improved prime sheep quality saw average prices rise at Monday’s (9 January) sale, with 522 prime hoggs going under the hammer.

Overall, prices levelled at 212p/kg, with a top price of 248p/kg paid for a Beltex from Netherplace. “More hoggs are required to meet demand,” said auctioneer Michael Stewart from Harrison & Hetherington.

Top price per head went to another Beltex from Crawthat, selling for £116.

In the cattle ring, 42 cast cows commanded £100 a head more than in December, reaching a top of £1,045 for a 756kg Limousin from Pearsbyhall, and 165p/kg for a Limousin from Marchbank. Simmentals sold to 128p/kg, with Aberdeen Anguses to 123p and Holstein Friesians to 119p/kg.
