Ringside: Demand high for prime lambs at Ruthin

A smaller weekly entry of 2,633 prime lambs went under the hammer on Tuesday (22 October) at Ruthin Farmers’ Auction Mart, Denbighshire, but there was plenty of demand from a selection of buyers.
“Trade was better than expected, with the SQQ average at 170.7p/kg,” said auctioneer Elfor Morris. Superlight lambs topped the trade at 209.8p/kg and averaged 154.9p/kg, with medium lambs averaging 173.5p/kg and overweight lambs 146.9p/kg. Cull sheep levelled at £33.65, with Texel rams selling to £70 apiece.
In the cattle ring, strong demand led to an average prime heifer price of 223p/kg, with steers settling at 221.4p/kg. Medium weight heifers reached a top of 259.5p/kg, with heavy steers peaking at 230.5p/kg. Over-30-month cattle topped at 190.5p/kg.
