Ringside: Firmer prices at Oban

Sheep prices continued to firm at Caledonian Marts’ sale on Tuesday (3 May). The 286 ewes sold to £118 for Suffolks, and averaged £64.30 a head – £8.30 stronger than the previous sale. Some 363 store hoggets averaged £69.53 a head, up by £6.51. A pen of Suffolks peaked at £114.
In the cattle section, 256 stores and five young bulls went under the hammer. Bullocks averaged 191p/kg liveweight – up 21p on the previous sale, and peaked at 231p/kg for a 245kg Limousin, or £820 gross for a 530kg Simmental. Heifer prices increased by 23p to average 185p/kg, selling to a top of 211p/kg and £800 gross for a 380kg Limousin. Bull prices weakened by 6p, to settle at 139p/kg, with a top of 177p/kg.
