Scottish arable farm attracts strong buyer interest

After a dearth of farms coming onto the Scottish market this year, it is perhaps not surprising that two additions have already attracted strong interest.

The first is a fine 1,200-acre arable enterprise in central Scotland, which is being put up for sale as its owner retires. It comprises four units – Airth Mains, Dunmore Home Farm (pictured), Dunmore Park and Letham Farm – all within a two-mile radius of Airth, near Falkirk. The farm offers good-quality land, three farmhouses and about 11,000sq m of buildings.

It attracts a single payment of about £117,000, with a public weighbridge bringing in extra income.

It has all been farmed as one unit, growing wheat, barley, break crops and, in the past, hay for the equestrian market and potatoes. “This is one of the best arable units to hit the market for many years, in my opinion, and it has been very well maintained,” said selling agent Niall Macalister-Hall of Smiths Gore. The farm is offered as a whole or in five lots, with offers over £7.475m being sought for the whole.

Another Scottish property to attract strong interest is Drumcross Farm in Bishopton, Renfrewshire.

“Buyers want something tangible – something they can see and walk on, rather than putting their money in stocks and shares,” said James Butler of Strutt & Parker in Glasgow, who was looking for offers over £1.125m for the 178-acre arable farm. In the current market, quality land in the west of Scotland was attracting prices of between £4000 and £5000/acre, he said.
