Skylark hits top note in Angus & Shorthorn duet

Among the choicest lots at the dispersal of Alan Rose’s Wester Bleaton Beef Shorthorn herd at Perth was a heifer suckling a bull calf that topped the trade at 7200gns.


Westerbleaton Skylark, a roan daughter of Toab Tirval, was bought by James Porter who is building up a Beef Shorthorn herd alongside his Old Glenort Aberdeen Angus herd.


Skylark, out of a dam by Uppermill Recto, was suckling a red-coated bull calf by Trunley Timber.


Mr Porter paid the day’s second highest price of 4200gns for a young cow by Uppermill Severn suckling a heifer calf by Craigowmill Nutmeg.


He gave a further 3000gns for the 1999-bred red cow Derrage Playful Gina.


This Uppermill Ray daughter was suckling a red heifer calf by Craigowmill Nutmeg.


And Mr Porter added a stylish maiden heifer by Toab Tirval at 3000gns.


The sale included Mr Rose’s Aberdeen Angus herd which sold to 2600gns for the stock bull Lockerley Mr Big.


This four-year-old son of Netherton Eastern Cruz stayed locally with Perth buyer F McGibbon.


Females sold to 2200gns when the maiden heifer Galcantray Electra sold to Messrs Baillie, Orkney.


The 1997-bred cow Auchencloich Ella – a daughter of Ushaw Bar Hart – was offered with her heifer calf at foot and made 2000gns to Mrs R Moore, Renfrew.


Averages: Beef Shorthorn – 27 cows 2084, four maiden heifers 1995 and four bulls 1071.


Aberdeen Angus – 52 cows 974, 15 maiden heifers 860 and three bulls 1539.
