Spring lambs fetch decent prices at Brecon market

Brecon market’s Easter show and sale on Tuesday (7 April) saw an encouraging entry of spring lambs that fetched decent prices, says McCartneys auctioneer Chris Jones.

A total of 87 lambs averaged “a very pleasing” 232p/kg, about 30p/kg ahead of last year. Prices topped out at 266p/kg (£104) for a 39kg lamb.

“The spring lamb trade’s been a bit later than usual due to the wet February and dry March. But with prices like that, we can’t really complain.”

Hoggets also did very well, with prices averaging 182p/kg, well above the 130p/kg seen this time last year. “It’s been good trade all round, let’s hope it continues,” Mr Jones said.

There was also a record entry of cull ewes – 996 in total – as farmers took advantage of the strong trade. Prices averaged £50 a head and hit £111.
