Precision farming at Pig & Poultry Fair

With data set to be one of the most important management tools in farming, the Royal Agricultural Society of England will be advising visitors at the British Pig & Poultry Fair in May on the collection, analysis and effective use of data.

The RASE stand (38A) will showcase the latest technologies and innovations being used to improve pig and poultry performance, reduce environmental impact and ensure sustainable and profitable industries.

This includes monitoring animal behaviour, climate, water and feed intake for early health warnings, and the use of electronic identification for pigs.

A number of experts, including Oxford University’s Prof Marian Dawkins and Fancom’s Simon Lague, will be on hand throughout the day to offer advice.

Producers and industry stakeholders will have the opportunity to discuss the latest innovations and new technology available, and how that might be applied to their farming business to enhance physical and financial performance.

“With growing pressure on agricultural production through a number of factors including a growing population, labour constraints, rising input costs and consumer concerns, there has never been a more important time to improve productive efficiency,” said Charlotte Johnston, technical adviser at the RASE. In addition, the RASE will be presenting the findings of a new report, Re-fuelling the Countryside, on both days at 1.30pm at the Growing Your Business forum on energy .

The report looks at the opportunities and challenges associated with renewable transport fuels on farms and in rural communities.
