Farmer’s book chronicles dairying through the seasons

What do you get if you give a farmer a £100 camera and ask him to carry it round with him for a year? The answer – a book which beautifully captures day-to-day life in the working countryside

He never intended to produce a book.

Richard Cornock spent 12 months snapping everyday scenes between January and December on his Gloucestershire farm using a pocket digital camera, originally intending it to be a personal record. He might, he thought, get the pictures printed privately in a one-off book as a Christmas present for his parents.

A bit of persuasion by friends, some internet research and an enthusiastic publisher meant he soon found himself on the road to authorship

“Quite by accident and with a little bit of luck,” is how Richard describes the process that resulted in him getting a book on the shelves.

“Hopefully it will give an insight into the day-to-day running of a small dairy farm and give people something to think about as they drive past fields of cows on their way to work, or enjoy a pint of fresh milk on their cornflakes in the morning,” says Richard.
