Farming, sporting and a fine house on Scottish peninsula

Livestock, arable, sporting and nine miles of stunning coastline are on offer at the 7360-acre Carskiey Estate, forming the Mull of Kintyre, in Argyll.

The estate has a reputation for high-quality stock and meat from its beef and sheep enterprises and the new owner will also get stalking, fishing and shooting as part of the deal. The land includes 120 acres of arable and 330 acres of permanent pasture with the remaining 6685 being rough grazing and hill land.

This former seat of the MacNeills of Carskey, with a nine-bedroom house built in 1905 and largely unchanged since then, is guided at offers above £2.95m, including modern farm buildings and a further nine estate houses and cottages, four of which need refurbishing.

There are also three commercial timber plantations, 164 acres in all, and various areas of amenity woodland with potential to increase the area of planting. There was also scope to expand the farming enterprise, said Tom Stewart-Moore of Strutt & Parker’s Edinburgh office.

It is a condition of the sale that the buyer takes on the machinery and stock by separate negotiation. The sporting includes red deer, roe deer, grouse and fishing but is not used by the current owners who live away from the estate.

Strutt & Parker’s Andrew Smith is expecting worldwide interest in Carskiey, which he says describes as magical and a stunning coastal location, overlooking Carskey Bay.

The Mull of Kintyre was made famous by Sir Paul McCartney in his number one song of the same name in 1977. The firm is also selling the slightly larger Glenprosen sporting estate near Kirriemuir in Angus for offers higher than £3m.
