Harper wins major catering industry award

Harper Adams University College has beaten two top hotels to win a major catering industry award for its sustainable approach to food and waste management.

The Sustainable Business Award was handed to the university last night at The Cateys annual awards dinner in London attended by the UK’s leading chefs and hoteliers.

The judges applauded its work in putting sustainable development and environmental considerations at the heart of its catering, making sure food is sourced and disposed of in the most ethical manner possible.

Harper Adams sources produce from local providers and this year installed an anaerobic digester on campus to cut co2 emissions by around 14,000 tonnes a year.  The digester generates 75 per cent of the college’s overall energy requirements and takes in all food waste from the campus.

Some 85 per cent of materials, such as paper cups, metal tins and cooking oil are recycled and fair-trade products are widely used.

The Cateys are recognised as the Oscars of the hospitality industry and Harper Adams had to compete against the London Marriott Hotel, Marble Arch and Cottage Lodge hotel in the New Forest, Hampshire to win.
The judges said:  “Harper Adams is a shining example of an organisation truly committed to sustainability: every aspect of their business is considered in their strategy. This approach should be mirrored by other organisations.”
