JCB launches new series of toughphones

Two years after the first JCB Toughphone was launched, a new range of almost-unbreakable mobiles has been announced.
As with the earlier model, they are being marketed jointly with Data Select (of Peter Jones and Dragons Den fame). Some 50,000 Toughphones have been sold since 2008 and Data Select reckons the UK market could grow to 250,000 devices in the next couple of years.
While the previous JCB Toughphone was made by US maker Sonim, the look of the new ones suggests a fair degree of input from another US toughphone maker Durrocomm.
There are three versions (all with suitably Bob the Builder names) :
• Tradesman
This phone is said to be dust-resistant, 100% waterproof and will float if dropped into water. It’s a basic unit, with a colour screen and just bluetooth and FM radio as extras. Cost is around £70.
• Sitemaster
This is water and dust-resistant and 2m drop-tested. Additional features incude a torch and wind-up charger. Cost is around £110.
• Pro-talk
This is a much more sophisticated unit, with dual SIM cards, a 2MP camera, touchscreen and GPS. Cost is about £245, though for another £10 you can have a version with an 8-channel two-way radio that works with any standard walkie-talkie.
How do you get hold of them? The official website is www.jcbphone.co.uk but websites like www.Amazon.co.uk and www.play.com will stock them from the end of November.
