McDonald’s launches young farmers training scheme

McDonald’s UK and Ireland has launched a year-long training programme to support undergraduate students passionate about careers in food, farming and supply chains across the UK and Ireland.

The Progressive Young Farmer programme offers full-time college and university students the chance to gain practical experience across the entire McDonald’s supply chain “from farm to front counter”.

Each participant will be matched with a host farmer and supplier, working across sectors including beef, pork, chicken, potatoes, dairy or eggs.

The initiative includes hands-on farm placements, time in processing facilities, and individual project work focused on improving technical efficiency.

Ellie Wotherspoon, agriculture and sustainable sourcing manager at McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: “The programme provides invaluable experience and exposure to every stage of the McDonald’s supply chain.

“It brings a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by those in the industry, and provides unparalleled opportunities for those passionate about farming, food, agriculture and sustainability.”

Key themes

Key themes of the programme include regenerative agriculture, sustainable production and balancing commercial performance with environmental responsibility.

Participants will also gain insights into the day-to-day running of the McDonald’s business, allowing them to develop skills beyond farming and understand broader industry operations.

Harry Morley, a member of the 2024-25 cohort, said: “By exposing participants to a wide variety of people and sectors in agriculture, the programme gives candidates a well-versed insight into the industry.

“Not only have I learnt more about sectors I had previously not had much exposure to, I’ve also acquired so many transferable skills.

“I know that the experience I’ve had meeting new people and learning from experienced colleagues will stand me in good stead for the future.”

More than 80 students have completed the programme to date and have progressed into careers within the agri-food sector.

Participating suppliers include Pilgrim’s Europe, Kerry, Dawn Meats, Cranswick, McCain, Arla and OSI.
