New NFYFC president urges members to ‘speak out’

Helping young people get their opinions heard will be a key priority of new NFYFC president Charlotte Smith.

The TV and radio presenter, who was elected president on 23 April, stressed there has never been a more important time for the next generation to speak out. “It’s crucial to get your voices heard,” she said.

“Let your local media know when your club is doing something good, and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone if something agriculture-related is being talked about in the media and you have an opinion,” she said.

The ability to express yourself is a skill possessed by many YFC members, she said.

“In my career, I’ve often interviewed young people and I can always tell the ones who have been in Young Farmers as they are articulate and confident.”

Super excited

Charlotte, although admitting to being “neither young nor a farmer”, said she was super-excited about her forthcoming two years as president – and she certainly enjoyed convention.

“People told me that the weekend was a marathon not a sprint – and that I should wear comfortable shoes!

“I stayed up to 2am on the first night – and I haven’t stayed up that late in years!”
