Nuffield scholarship deadline looms

Nuffield Farming Scholarships have announced a major date change to their application calendar – moving the closing date for applications forward to 31 July.

Each year, Nuffield awards about 20 people the opportunity to research topics of interest in farming, food, horticulture and rural sectors.

Scholars are able to travel anywhere in the world, visiting one or more countries to increase their knowledge and understanding of a subject, with a view to advancing their respective industries.

The scholarships provide an opportunity for individuals to study a subject of personal interest, unlock potential and broaden horizons through study and overseas travel, access world leaders in food and farming and benefit agriculture and related industries through knowledge transfer.

Cambridge arable farmer James Peck was awarded a scholarship in 2010, then aged 33.

“My Nuffield scholarship was the best thing I’ve ever done,” said Mr Peck. “I spent 23 weeks travelling and visited 12 countries in total while studying my topic of choice: “Arable farming – where next”.

“I was anxious about leaving my business for a minimum eight-week block, but felt it was necessary in order to be able to stand back from my business, and as a result, get the most out of the Nuffield experience, which turned out to be life changing.”

Scholarships are open to individuals aged between 22 and 45 years old and who have been engaged in farming, rural land-based industries, food and agricultural industries for two years, and who intend to remain in these industries. Prospective scholars do not need academic qualifications.
