Our irreverent ‘breeds’ prove a hit

Farmers Weekly‘s new collection of Farming Breeds is already proving a hit with readers, after its launch on Friday.

This series takes an irreverent and tongue-in-cheek look at the countryside characters we’ve all encountered – characters like the machinery dealer, the newbie vet, the naked calendar ladies, the local gossip or the retired army major.

The one that immediately got people talking was “Bob the Twitter addict” who, having got the bug, is never to be found without his smart phone and “will tweet in the tractor, in the kitchen, in the yard, in the office – he’s even been known to tweet in the bath.”

Readers have been commenting about Bob on (where else) Twitter over the weekend.

“It’s so funny and so true!” tweeted @VictoriaRedshaw.

Meanwhile, @AgronomyMan wrote: “My wife is convinced that is about me.”

This was a sentiment echoed by @julierobinson_. “Brilliant! RT [retweet] if you thought this was written about YOU,” she said.

“It’s all spookily familiar!” tweeted @scotfoodjames

The series features 10 new “breeds” plus the previously published 30 ones, all accompanied by illustrations by popular cartoonist Jake Tebbit.

“Some great new ones!” declared @halo42, while @AndrewbCole tweeted: “This is hilarious – I have the original book from 2000, still pull it out occasionally for a laugh.”

The new “breeds” include the bachelor farmer who “demonstrated rather too graphically the workings of his Victorian raddle harness when Antiques Roadshow came to the local market town” and the machinery dealer who can flog tractors to anyone.
