Spud-u-like? Man takes on 60 day potato-only diet

An American man is eating 20 spuds a day for two months in an attempt to remind the public potatoes are good for them.

Chris Voigt, executive director of the Washington State Potato Commission, started the diet on 1 October to dispel the myth that potatoes were unhealthy.

In a video released before the challenge he said potato products such as chips and crisps were seen by the public as the “scourge of the earth,” frequently being blamed for escalating child obesity and diabetes.

“I want to show the world that the potato is so healthy that you could live off them alone for an extended period of time, without any negative impact to your health,” he said.

The diet was strictly potatoes only and nothing else, he said. ” No toppings, no chili, no sour cream, no cheese, no gravy, just potatoes and maybe some seasonings or herbs and a little oil for some of the cooking.”

Nearing the halfway point with 33 days remaining, Mr Voigt had stuck to the diet, eating potato products ranging from the humble jacket to gnocchi and McDonald’s chips.

But boredom meant he did stray slightly from his original goal using hot sauce topping and indulging in some potato ice cream.
