Worker airlifted to hospital with serious injuries
A farmworker has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after his arm became trapped in a potato sorting machine.
The 36-year-old Polish man was trapped for more than two hours while paramedics worked to free him from the machine at Mercer Farming in Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire.
He was taken by helicopter to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, for treatment after the accident on Tuesday (13 November).
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman described the injuries to the man’s arm as extremely serious.
The machine was rented by Rugeley-based farmers WB Daw & Sons.
Mavis Daw, who runs the business with her husband James, told a BBC reporter they were “horror struck” when they heard what had happened.
She added that the man was not supposed to have been near the machine at the time.
A Health and Safety Executive spokesman said they were investigating.
