World-class training course for backyard poultry

Backyard poultry producers in Scotland will be able to get tips and training from the experts later this month with the Scottish Agricultural College’s one-day training course designed specially for beginners.
The course will cover all the basics of keeping chickens for meat or eggs, with participants not expected to have any prior knowledge.
“Your favourite chookie may be a pet, but it is just as important you to understand about welfare or disease as any commercial producer with thousands of birds,” Ms Lorraine Hannah, lecturer in Poultry Production with the SAC, said.
“Folk who keep hens in their back gardens don’t have to register as poultry keepers so we have no idea of actual numbers, but previous meetings I have spoken at in Aberdeenshire have been very well attended and show it has taken off in a big way”.
