Young farmers to showcase island life through community mural
© Adobe Stock Young farmers on the Isle of Wight are set to capture the island’s farming landscape in a new community mural, offering a creative platform to reflect everyday rural life.
The project, led by members of the Isle of Wight Young Farmers Club (YFC), is supported by Creative Island’s Can You Hear Us? programme.
Once completed, the mural will be displayed at agricultural shows across the island during the summer.

Designed by and for the rural community, the artwork aims to highlight the role of young farmers while giving them an opportunity to express what agriculture and the countryside mean to them.
Isle of Wight YFC chairman Georgie Lorenzen said the mural would reflect members’ personal connections to farming and the environment.
“The aim is to show how they interact with their local environment, what farming means to them and to reflect the importance of the club for them,” she said.
Around 30 members, aged between 10 and 28, are expected to take part in creating the piece.
Working alongside local artists, the group will use acrylic pens on marine ply to produce a durable mural suitable for outdoor display.
The initiative also offers young farmers a chance to step away from day-to-day tasks and collaborate on a project that represents their shared experiences of farming on the island.
Project inspiration
The Isle of Wight’s varied landscape is expected to play a central role in the mural’s design.
Ms Lorenzen described the island as “a great mixture” and “very diverse,” pointing to its combination of chalk downland used for grazing and fertile lowland soils suited to vegetable production.
She added that the contrast between productive farmland, wildlife habitats and traditional stone buildings would help shape the final artwork, which is in its early design phase.
Club members recently showcased the initiative during a visit by His Royal Highness Prince Edward at Quay Arts in Newport, highlighting both the mural project and the wider work of the Isle of Wight YFC.
