30,000 lamb macs sent out to Waitrose suppliers

Farmers supplying lamb to Waitrose have been sent 30,000 lamb macs following the extreme weather conditions.

Dalehead Foods, on behalf of Waitrose, sent out the macs to several hundred farmers in the West Country and Wales to help maximise lamb survival in unprecedented weather conditions.

Speaking to Farmers Weekly, Liz Rees head of lamb procurement at Dalehead Foods, said: “We felt the conditions were so horrendous and challenging for producers we wondered how we could possibly help. We felt the lamb macs would help maximise lamb survival in such conditions.”

The macs, which were mainly purchased from Farmsense, are made of a light plastic material and completely biodegradable and recyclable.

Dalehead Foods, which is a dedicated supplier of lamb to Waitrose, has been working closely with all its farmers to assess the impact of the snow on lamb supplies. Ms Rees said it was too early to tell whether the weather would affect lamb supply this year.
