MANY BELIEVE the eastern counties are totally devoid of livestock, but a quick check of the high-quality animals at last weekend’s East of England Show would have soon assured them otherwise.
Nowhere was this more evident than in the beef lines, where no fewer than 68 exhibitors were vying for top spot. Showing them all the way it should be done was David Sapsed’s classy Simmental cow Awl Starlet.
Canadian-bred Starlet made it two interbreed championships in as many weeks, having clinched top honours at the South of England show just eight days previously.
Starlet is one of 50 cows kept by Codicote, Herts-based Mr Sapsed and is in calf to the farm’s stock bull Hocknehull Kramer. Just pipped for the honours was Matt Brunton’s Limousin bull Sheelin Tiger.
This Ronick Hawk-sired bull was also continuing an impressive show run, having previously stood interbreed champion at the Newark and Notts show and never yet being beaten in a bull class.
There was also stiff competition among the sheep entries, where Atherton, Warks-based Suffolk breeder Charles Harding undertook the job of finding the interbreed champion.
After surveying all 13 section champions, Mr Harding’s choice came from his own breed, in the shape of Derek and Jean Ritchie’s Suffolk shearling ewe.
The homebred ewe from the Ritchies’ 100-ewe Parkstock flock is sired by Stockton Ensign and out of a ewe by Cairness Storm.
It looked close to being a Suffolk one and two, as Mr Harding called out the reserve breed champion, a ram lamb from John Gent, to compare with the other breed champions.
But his final choice for reserve spot was the Beltex champion, a shearling ewe from the Lincs-based D and W Livestock partnership.
Among pig entries it was a familiar story, with Peter Reeder taking top honours with a Welsh pig.
But this time out it was one of Mr Reeder’s boars, Lopham Victor 18, which took the ticket. Homebred Victor is by Milday Victor 69 and out of the homebred sow Lopham Lucky Girl 60.
Standing reserve to the boar was another pig from the Reeder stable, this time a July 2003-born Welsh gilt, Lopham Lucky Girl 71.
Unfortunately, dairy classes are where the East of England show suffers, with just 13 exhibitors showing in two breeds, Holsteins and Dexters. Leading the way here was the Holstein champion, a cow from Alan Smith’s 300-cow herd.
This cow, Bressingham Storm, was bought from Roger Aves in Norfolk, gave 9800 litres as a heifer and has so far given 12,800 litres in just 201 days of her second lactation.
“She is still giving 64 litres a day and is probably the best cow we’ve ever owned,” said Mr Smith.
Standing reserve in the Hosltein classes was a homebred third calver from Roger Steeples. Cramar Aeroline is an Oliveholm Aeroline daughter who gave 11,700 litres in her second lactation and has been flushed, producing 26 embryos.
