New factory aids processors

A CUSTOM-BUILT mobile food factory could be the cost-effective way for livestock producers wishing to sell produce further up the food chain and process their own meat or milk on farm.

Kate Walker of Innes Walker, makers of the Foodbarn, said that each unit meets EC standards for water, electricity and drainage and its three rooms can be laid out to provide cold room, processing, storage and packaging departments.” It can be suitable for processing anything, from sausages to ready meals or cheese, she added.

“Livestock producers can no longer simply prepare food on their kitchen table for sale through farmers markets or farm shops.

“We also found there was a considerable cost in setting up, which means there is debt round your neck before you can make any money,” said Mrs Walker.

Starting from 20,000, the Foodbarns are on a chassis and, weighing 3.5t, are easily towed by a four-wheel drive.

Mrs Walker said the company offers a full package with information about claiming the relevant grants plus a flexible lease/purchase option.
