Dairy Event 2011: Mastitis survey results revealed
The number of dairy farmers tackling between 26 and 50 cases of mastitis for every 100 cows is on the rise, according to results from the 2011 National Mastitis Survey.
Revealing the results of the survey at this year’s Dairy Event and Livestock Show, vet Andy Biggs said although the number of dairy farmers tackling one to 25 cases of mastitis for every 100 cows had dropped, the amount tackling 26 to 50 cases had increased.
The survey also revealed instances of higher bulk milk somatic cell counts (BMSCC) where tubes were used alone, but lower somatic cell counts where a combination therapy was used.
It was also found that farms where more cows were looked after by one milker had a higher incidence of mastitis, while there was a higher incidence of farmers responding “no” as to whether or not they did post-milking disinfection.
