Royal Welsh Show 2013: Winner of Welsh grassland farming competition

A Ceredigion dairy farmer has won this year’s prestigious Welsh Grassland Farming Competition.
Andrew Owen of Pantygwail, Lampeter, was awarded the Federation Perpetual trophy at this year’s Royal Welsh Agricultural Show.
He now qualifies to compete against regions across the UK for the coveted national British Grassland award.
Lead judge Dr Heather McCalman of IBERS Grassland Development Centre said: “The family farm runs a well-developed, but flexible grassland system in a marginal area with excellent milk from forage achieved through attention to detail in both grazing and silage management.”
Runners up were Mr and Mrs EC and A Evans, Holyhead, Anglesey; Messrs JH and EL Jones, Pool Quay, Welshpool; K Morgan, Sennybridge, Brecon and S Richards, Haverfordswest, Pembrokeshire.
Last year’s winner was Farmers Weekly’s Sheep Farmer of the Year Neil Perkins.
