George Moss’ English couple have settled into NZ life

The English have arrived. Andy and Trace have arrived from the UK and within two days Andy is proving he is adept at milking cows New Zealand-style. Andy’s arrival is going to ease a lot of work pressure across the properties and allow for the catch-up to begin.

First day on the job, and we have already installed a new effluent pump to reduce the risk of non-compliance and potential penalties.

Cows on both farms continue to milk in excess of 2kg milk-solids a cow a day. And both farms have made more silage since last report. This will buffer us well against a dry spell. Pasture growth is erratic as there has only been “just enough” rain, which has often been followed by very strong winds leaving the grass hard and “stemmy”. Priority on the organic farm is going to be re-instating pasture quality by using the mower to “top” ahead.

Stock prices for Friesian weaned calves are outstanding in excess of $1,000 each. Sixteen calves were sold off the conventional farm. This money has been committed to improving the race into the dairy which has been causing lame cows despite a “big spend” on it last season. Frustrating! Quotes are being sought to do a major upgrade on races on the organic farm this autumn.

Reflecting on the year, last season finished well and this season is looking promising both in terms of production and milk pricing.

We wish all those reading this a great Christmas and a New Year that meets your aspirations.
