Ghana is the ninth African country to confirm an outbreak of the H5N1 avian flu virus.
Agriculture minister Ernest Debrah today confirmed that the outbreak discovered on a farm east of the capital city, Accra, on April 24 was the H5N1 virus. About 100 birds had died for the past 3 or 4 days.
“More than 1700 birds have been culled to control the outbreak,” he said.
The other eight countries that have seen outbreaks of the virus in birds are Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Egypt, Niger and Sudan.
