Lely’s Commodus takes a new look at cow cubicle design, dispensing with vertical posts and a neck rail, and putting the side rails higher, plus plastic partitions on the floor.

The result, says the company, is more space at the sides for the cow, more encouragement to lie straight and less metalwork to bash against.

The side rails also have a rubber-block damping system, which means they can move if the cow pushes against them.
