FFA calls for Brazilian import ban

FARMERS FOR Action chairman David Handley has called for an immediate suspension of imports from Brazil because of foot-and-mouth disease concerns.

A suspected case of F&M has been found on a farm in a state of the country which had been recognised as disease-free.

Mr Handley said there may not be a risk but any risk was too small in the circumstances UK livestock producers have recently faced.

“We have to protect our badly bruised livestock industry and cannot afford the risk of a further FMD outbreak in the UK,” he said.

Mr Handley said he was not asking the UK government to set a precedent as the Australian government had already suspended imports from Brazil.

He also wanted to see the NFU calling for an immediate suspension.
