Next generation perennial ryegrass launched

A next generation high-sugar perennial ryegrass that can offer improved livestock finishing efficiency is set to go on sale next year.
AberWolf, which has been developed by IBERS, offers a combination of improved persistency, high yield and high sugar levels.
National list trials run by the British Society of Plant Breeders show the diploid has up to 6% higher DM yields when compared to similar varieties.
IBERS plant breeder Alan Lovatt said: “The high sugar content will give farmers more efficient livestock production. It is a win-win situation.”
The variety is already on the National list, but it is expected to be added to the NIAB recommended list next year and will be commercially available thereafter.
