Pork imports rise sharply
PIGMEAT IMPORTS rose sharply in the first six months of this year, according to figures from the Meat and Livestock Commission.
Fresh and frozen pork imports rose 10% compared with last year, while exports have declined by almost the same amount.
Independent consultant Peter Crichton said domestic production was being displaced in the market as the sector continued to contract.
“Weekly pig slaughter figures have fallen significantly, now down 7% on the same time last year,” he said.
“As the industry continues to contract, imported pigmeat is filling the vacuum.
“Exports have also suffered due to a strong pound, and wasting diseases such as PMWS are keeping mortality rates high.”
