Jamie Oliver wins animal welfare award
Jamie Oliver was a big winner at this year’s Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) animal welfare awards, for his support of responsible egg, chicken and pork sourcing.
The TV chef took home a Good Egg, Good Chicken, and a Good Pork award (accepted on his behalf by a representative, pictured above) for using meat and eggs from animals reared to a high welfare standard, as well as “raising public awareness on issues such as animal welfare”.
Other British firms given a nod at the awards included Noble-owned GU puddings, for a commitment to using only free-range eggs before 2014.
A number of European food firms were also winners on the night. Iglo Foods Group, behind Bird’s Eye and Findus, was awarded a Golden Egg for using cage-free (barn or free range) eggs in all its products across Europe.
Good Chicken awards went to Dutch caterer Johma Foodservice and Polish poultry manufacturer SPA Food, both for rearing a higher-welfare bird.
This year the charity had a major push onto the continent, opening new offices in Italy and Poland and combining its European and UK awards for the first time.
Dr Tracey Jones, director of food business at CIWF, said: “We have been impressed by the calibre of entries for this year’s awards and have been pleased with the range of companies from across Europe who have been recognised for their work.”
